Photos of Citadel of Aleppo

Remembering Syria - III: Alep Citadel by Egisto Sani

Remembering a fabulous historical city, today, probably, no longer existing. The most striking view of the Citadel is the approach to the sole entrance bridge and monumental gateway. This masterpiece of Arab military architecture combines the practical with the flamboyant. The bold sweep of the rising bridge, the depth of the ditch (22 m) and the steepness of the surrounding glacis (48 m) culminate in the entrance façade rising several storeys and incorporating a deep arch and a complex range of defensive devices. The effect is emphasized by the window surrounds of contrasting stone in black and white. Source: Burns R., The Monuments of Syria Alep Citadel XIII – XIV Century Alep, Suria
